Vicarious is the best song on 10k days

I'd the so-called hidden track's the best. The way the harmonies appear and disappear and the tracks blend only to lose connection over and over again is incredible.

I'm gonna be the odd man out and say that undertow is wayyyy better than 10,000 days. the best song on 10k (rosetta stoned) is better than anything on undertow, but yeah undertow is hella more consistent and much better overall imo.

undertow is a great alt metal album that borrowed from, and somewhat expanded on, what was going on in the early 90s grunge scene. when I'm in the mood for some dark and angry rock thats a great record to put on, but its not what I go for when I wanna jam Tool

they found their niche with Aenima (my personal fav) by mixing the aggressive, dark and disturbing tones of the now birthing nu metal movement with psych and prog influences while still distancing themselves from being labeled any of those three genres. I see it as the band in their prime and their most experimental work

they then progressed furthest and peaked with this new sound on Lateralus, which feels very tinkered and calculated, while also exploring the spiritual new age and psych themes that now define them with tracks like the t/t and reflection, while also adopting alex grey's art style as sort of a mascot to this sound. love it or hate it, its a unique style that separates the band from other acts

10k days is just a continuation of the lateralus sound, while paying homage to their older stuff with tracks like rosetta stoned and the pot. the sound seems somewhat stagnant and the bloated feeling from so many useless interlude tracks sort of holds it back from being as good as their other albums, but it ultimately shows the band still has it

just my full dollar on tool's LPs

Undertow and 10K are about equal to me and liking them both for different reasons. Undertow for its dark, raw and straightforward yet proggish hardrock stylings. And 10K for the more modern/polished, progressive/enhanced and almost meditative sound. Although I too find Undertow to be a bit more consistent.

Agreed with TheSpaceMan, though I wouldn't call Lateralus "tinkered". It's intellectual music, far from spontaneous, but that's where part of its strength lies. It feels like an ancient message from long gone civilisations written in perfect triangles and spheres, a key to the universe. I rarely like calculated approach to music, but this is the one case where it's desirable and effective.

And as TheSpaceMan said, 10k is worse than Undertow and it's no contest. 10k with its production and polish is much easier on the ear, but it's so tired and repetitive while Undertow's fresh, provocative, vital.

Read a book something. That's how you become an intellectual, not this bologna
