"but not at the cost of their core identity"

That's just where we'll have to disagree, cause whenever I hear any album of theirs past this, I hear an entirely different band. And whatever intent they had just gets lost in the fold when I can't hear that original 3-piece sound underneath.

In summation: I'm a crusty hater that just don't get it none, y'hear? I'll take my B- in English now, Mrs. Thistleman.

Nah, nothing wrong with a little debate. Trust me, I'm aware Good News is not for everyone. And as much as I love to defend it--and I will continue to do so--I know that, despite aspects that I believe are firmly objective (i.e. this isn't a pop-fest like many like to say), a lot of my reasoning eventually becomes heavily personal.

I said my 'Mouse ratings are outdated because I've basically turned Isaac Brock into me, me into Brock. No other band 'gets' me like these guys have, and their records always mirror my life--sometimes intentionally, sometimes because, as I said, I have placed myself in the band's lyrical narratives. My existentialism, my loneliness, my depression, they're all spelled out by Brock and co.

It's how I can latch on to something like Good News or Strangers, things others hate, and absolutely fall in love. Each has qualities that are underrated, but they also get such a high standing because of my experiences.

Methinks "Spitting Venom" is getting a tad overrated there son.

Yeah these are my least favorite from these guys, but they’re both still hard 3.5s and verging on 4.

Strangers is so underrated. It’s actually really good. Just a tad inconsistent.

Strangers definitely has its moments but it's still just sorta decent.

It’s inconsistent but so many good to great songs: Lampshades on Fire, Shit in Your Cut, The Ground Walks, Coyotes, The Best Room (maybe best song here) and Of Course We Know. But unfortunately the other tracks are kindof meh. The section from Sugar Boars-Tortoise is quite lame. Tbh I just skip that section about half of my listens now.

"Well, like I said, it tries to blend the post-rock aspect with the sound they established on their previous records but it just doesn't do it for me. Take Gravity Rides Everything, for example. Or Dark Center of the Universe. I don't like the way they handle those transitions from quiet post to loud indie."

Not sure how GRE transitions from quiet post to loud indie, I don't hear much post rock in the song, and it stays pretty mellow. DCOF does get loud, but the change up is noticeably less abrupt than say TLGS on the Lonesome Crowded West.

Nah Spitting Venom is fantastic, I do however like Good News a tad more than We Were Dead but both are solid/great

As Sandwich mentioned though no Jeremiah Green which is the only downside to me on that one

We Were Dead > Good News
One of them is unashamed indie-pop full of bangers, the other is tentative indie-pop with a few great singles and many half-baked b-sides

MM does half-baked b-sides really well though, as Scoot so timely mentioned lol.

For real though Building Nothing is top tier MM agreed

It's only 'tentative' in the sense that they are still true to their central sonic identity. We Were Dead goes overboard and does indeed commit to indie pop, but in doing so it is less of a Modest Mouse album.

TLGS is literally the only song I don't like on Crowded West. Also, I agree with Demon that the first three tracks on here are definitely the worst.
