Nah that doesn't mean shit. Someone had to be the first and they were it. Time is irrelevant.

Also writing BEGAN in 87. The songs then went through endless permutations throughout the early 90s.

They weren't the first though. See my history of black metal list. There were many bands that helped, and Mayhem were a big part of that but due to this album's delay it wasn't the first or most influential second wave album, and due to its delay it was also firmly rooted still in the first wave rather than the currently evolving second wave with other norwegian bands and those in greece too. By the time this even came out Darkthrone, Burzum and even Emperor had well defined second wave, and this one's sound was a vast departure and much more akin to those of the last first wave.

But as you said these songs were written, and presumably performed, before Burzum, Darkthrone etc. released any of their BM material, so isn't this still pretty OG second wave stuff?

It's correct to say that they belong to both eras. They started the trend and were part of it.

Yeah I mean I'd consider Mayhem as a whole to be the bridge for the first and second waves, at least/especialy for Norway. I believe Fenriz mentioned somewhere that Euro and Thorns cemented the iconic second-wave riff style. Those guys sparked the movement in a lot of ways.

Atmospheric black metal is a flamboyant little tart dressed in little more than gossamer wisps
