Yeah I reckon that’s why the average is so low compared to the other prog rock releases.

I have the advantage of coming to Opeth late & not having the shock of their ‘transition’ away from metal I guess, haha.

Every Opeth album from Orchid to Blackwater Park is a classic

Interesting opinion. Orchid was an ingenious record when it came out in 94. That album pushed the boundaries of metal, and laid the framework for their next several albums. It has its flaws in songwriting, but it had a massive impact on the scene and for Opeth as a band.

The only problem with Orchid for me is the immaturity of Mikael's transitions - the same can be said for Morningrise, each time sig tranistion or even metal to clean transition follows a break of silence (unless it's the same riff going from loud to clean), whereas from MAYH onwards he really discovers how to flow, this is the progress of him as a musician. It's why Watershed for me is an absolute masterpiece - it's seamless.

That being said, the creativity of the riffs alone on Orchid and Morningrise is incredible and deserves plaudits for that itself.

Songs like Heir Apparent & Hessien Peel are perfect to me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion however.

i dont even have a hard opinion on it tbh, i listened to it a few times when it was still relatively new and found it to be pretty boring, one of their worst up to that point

id love to be proven wrong though!
