Alright! Positives -
* For a album with "minimal drums." It's not as boring as you fear. It has climaxes. There's like three drums with a kick drum in here. Even some songs without the kick drum have climaxes. The climaxes aren't quite up there with any of the post-rock albums you like but they're still pretty effective and some of the compositions are pretty enjoyable and well-thought out.
* I really like the sound design. It is just as airy as they said it would be but it still manages to sound really full and for being an album with muted dynamics, it still sounds relatively dynamic.
* Jonsi still sounds exactly like he did in 1999. How the fuck does that work. The man is like 50 now. It makes no sense. Him and Jonny Greenwood got to be making out or something.
* It's effortlessly beautiful, of course. You knew it would be.
Negatives:
* I mean, it's also not nearly as exciting as you want it to be. Way less drums, way more orchestral swells is I guess a concept for a record, but you have to do something more than that, I feel. Valtari worked because it all worked as one cohesive composition. This is very much ten distinct compositions with not enough variation and minimal progression. I don't know if much really builds on much else here. It's probably most similar to Agaetis but without all the innovation and most of the energy. There's just not any new rabbits Sigur Ros has to pull out of its hat nowadays.
* You could easily be forgiven for finding at least half of this record completely indistinguishable from each other. And I feel if you've got that going on, an hour is too long.
* Like there's not even many different emotions being played out here. Just like several variations of glacial melancholy.
* You should probably just listen to the new King Gizzard record instead. But if you're on an endless road trip and want to forget time exists in the backseat, this would probably go well with valium.
Yay, it's a Sigur Ros album. 6/10, 7/10, something like that.

in no rational universe will i ever listen to the new king gizzard instead of literally anything else

New king gizz slaps Jas.
I tanked through 2 songs of the new Sigur Ros after lunch at work and that probably won't be remembered as one of my best life choices.

I have an amazingly low level of interest in Gizzard. They’re perpetually in the “nah, not interested” category

I like when they go down the hard path, but usually ignore the rest. The KG and LW albums were probably my favorite, those were very inspired. This new one is really fun too.

I’m glad you like it! Maybe I’ll give it a listen. Everything I’ve heard from them so far has gone in one ear and out the other, like trying to scoop soup with an upside down spoon. Set and setting and all could make the difference

New album’s pretty good so far. Not sure how often I’ll return to it if at all

I was hoping the new one was gonna go all post-industrial and glitchy, or something. I definitely wanted some harder-hitting percussion.
idk, part of me really needed that
I'll try not to judge it for sounding 'a bit like Valtari' (which I did actually enjoy btw - was just hoping for a no re-treads approach).
