I think the lyrics are my favourite part of Sad Songs...the first half describes a relationship doomed by insecurity (Thirsty, Cardinal Song), pessimism (Slipping Husband), jealousy (Murder Me Rachael, 90-Mile Water Wall) and mistrust (Cardinal Song), which all culminates rather violently in the events of Available; after which, the relationship appears to be over and the recovery process begins.
Alligator is best though imo...or maybe this...or maybe high violet...or maybe even trouble will find me...or...

The best changes every month it seems. I like how you have described Sad Songs there.

I also like that description of Sad Songs, I've seen it described as a song cycle before and that makes the cycle pretty clear.

Keep listening. The National's albums are basically the definition of growers. They don't quite click at first and then BANG and you are in love.
