That's actually a pretty good comparison. Damn I need to listen to Daisy again, Vices was the song that pulled me into Brand New in the first place

I've probably been overdoing the BN comparisons because I've been on a huge Brand New kick ever since "Simple Man/Lazy" leaked. But yeah, as a whole I think [Untitled] matches up pretty well with Daisy -- both albums have shocking moments of abrasion/chaos (7/29, Hydra, W&B, Michael versus Vices, Gasoline, Sink, Jar, Bride, etc) as well as more subdued melodic junctures (Dormouse, Solstice, Flee versus Bed, You Stole, Daisy, etc). That's why in my review I tried to draw a comparison between the two; I don't think it's one that stems from my BN fanboyism - they're actually similar.

I agree with the comparison. I don't think it's a fanboy thing more than just being familiar with both releases.

Yeah I totally agree

Wasn't aware a BN demo leaked. Charming little ditty. I relate to it far too much. They made the right decision leaving it out of their records, I think.

Agreed. I enjoy it but if it was truly from TDAG/Daisy era (as described by the anonymous leaker), there would not have been a good place for it on either record.

Do you think the band (Jesse) leaked it?

According to the leaker he/she is not in the band. Of course, that's exactly what someone in the band might say if they're still apprehensive about releasing music post-allegations. On the other half of the coin, it could be someone not technically "in" the band, but still very closely associated i.e. producer Mike Sapone or Jesse's wife Andrea, who has on several occasions posted about how incredible all of BN's unreleased songs are. Either way, I do believe the leak came with permission from Jesse and the rest of Brand New.

The message with it just seemed strikingly personal, and it was leaked on what was already announced as Brand New's last day as a band. Seems easier to believe this was done by the band.
"Thought this should see the light of day. Pre Devil and God era. I don't know if redemption is possible. Or if it should be. Bad people can do good things. Good people can do bad things. Maybe one day we'll all get some closure."
Anyway, enough with hijacking this thread.

The lyrics of this are giving me a hard time to decipher...especially as a non-native speaker

The lyrics are hard for me to decipher and I'm 100% native speaker...their metaphors and storytelling is very dense, it takes a lot to untangle the meaning of their songs...especially on [Untitled], which is even more cryptic than their other albums.

Nice to see that I am not alone with that. For the most time I've got the feeling of some sort of Shakespeare-era theatre play or idk

There have been 100 page analyses written for the two records before this just trying to interpret the lyrics (highly recommend them). There's another being written for this record right now.
I think Aaron Weiss is the best lyricist of our time by leaps and bounds, but what he writes is very dense and takes effort and investment to unravel.
You certainly are not alone.

Agreed Weiss is a generational lyricist.

What kind of hole did I fall into that I have to read 100 pages of interpretation to get the lyrics of a 45 min record? Now I am hooked. But also scared of all that work.

Honestly that PDF for Ten Stories brought that album to a classic for me. Some of the metaphors and ideas I hadn’t caught before reading it blew my mind

PH is the best album ever, although weirdly enough it's kinda a mix of the extreme ends of your ranking
