I can understand the low ratings absolutely. Its not as good of a death metal record as many others, but its kinda "the" mdm record. I love TBDM and im in a melo-death band so i cant talk shit lol

"Its not as good of a death metal record as many others"

The moment where this album really started to enter the territory of just being outright bad for me was when I revisited it as a thrash metal album (because that's what most of the riffs really are) and you realize just how ass the riffs are most standards for metal. Another melodeath classic where the melodies are about as gripping as the act of watching paint dry.

Probably a wild take but I think all of their albums since they reformed have been better than this

"A lot of Melodic Death Metal is bad if you force it to be death metal."

You're right, that's why I often compare a lot of melodeath albums to the genres they most regularly poach from, that being thrash and trad/power metal. Albums like this are still found lacking by those standards. Sometimes that isn't the case and you'll have some that are just really good thrash albums when you really break it down musically but that's less common, unfortunately. Probably because most of them insist on either aping this album or Heartwork.

"Imagine having fun listening to music"

I don't know how much you'd have to lack a pulse to listen to this and find it fun after like 2 listens.

Why revisit it as anything? Revisit it as music, and enjoy it or don't. I literally just don't understand the thought process of listening to this or anything else while forcing it into a genre. A lot of Melodic Death Metal is bad if you force it to be death metal. A lot of progressive death metal is bad if you force it to be progressive metal.

pretty much a good way of thinking about music in general, never really understood the need to put everything in super small boxes
