I've never been more hyped about an album than 'The Fragile' in 1999. It was a real favourite for about a year but then I just moved away from that sort of thing, soulless big production stuff like 'Lateralus'. Trent used up all his great song ideas by '95 and just recycles. Fragile is a strong 2.5 for me though, has its moments

I feel like sometimes we miss out on the best produced albums simply because of our bias. There is no doubt that the Fragile has amazing production, no matter how much I think it's mediocre.
This is another example of amazing production that is ignored due to the song's controversy :

admit it doof you're just following that pitchfork 0.2 aren't you :D
honestly though i guess it's just a matter of personal taste, for me The National or the recent Eitzel album you love so much are exactly what you see in The Fragile

The Fragile really is kidn of empty but it has a shit ton of great songs.
|
| |
And by shit ton i mean half of the damn 23 tracks which means technically it shouldn't even be a 2.5 lol
but if i rated it a 2.0 i'd have to review it......

Antichrist Superstar has goat production

Album Rating: 5.0
Antichrist's production is a near twin of this, which is no bad thing at all; works so well for it.
And all this talk of Fragile being Hollow?! Jesus, album fucking slays.

Na i'd have to say Doof is mostly right on The Fragile.

Antichrist took loads from this album, that's obvious, but it still has a very different overall atmosphere.
With late 90s/early 00s albums I prefer the angrier Nine Inch Nails album (Spiral ahead of Fragile), the angrier Tool album (Aenima over Lateralus) and the angrier Deftones album (Around the Fur over White Pony).
Just personal taste, I can see why people like the latter albums more than the former ones

Around the Fur has the t/t, Be Quiet, Dai the Flu, MX...consistent album for me
|
| |
Around the Fur has interesting style but it lacks variety. it's almost like listening to a good song... ten times in a row.
I agree about Aenima, I prefer it to Lateralus on most days myself, although I wouldn't call the latter hollow at all. The emotion on it is simply more sublime, while Aenima is intense but also kinda, well I don't want to say "cheap" but maybe "obvious" (in comparison)

Maybe more cerebral (lateralus) vs visceral (aenima). Aenima just sounds so disgusted by everything and for me that's what Tool are about - after that Maynard turned into Dr Manhatten and the band transcended on some sort of philosophical bubble.
Again Lateralus is another album I worshipped for a long time but by the time 10000 Days (correct album name?) dropped I had little interest in the band.

Should I listen to this in full or start with Pretty Hate Machine
