Massively. One of the biggest examples of sheen produced from style not impulse

Huge disagree. This isn't really a sheen album and while some of its melodramatic moments are kinda annoying (Sowing Season, that 'scare' in Luca), you don't get performers who sing and write like that (live also) unless their hearts are in it. Their lyrical style has always had a performative, confessional edge, but I'd have thought it was obvious how into it they were?
Especially since they could have spent the rest of their career making refined but derivative pop-punk instead of releasing this and no-one would ever have called them out on it

They absolutely could’ve continued making Deja Entendu style albums for the rest of their career and they would’ve made bank. The notion that Brand New doesn’t have musical integrity is both wrong and fucking stupid.

Go ahead and hate the band if you want, but they aren’t sellouts

'Massively. One of the biggest examples of sheen produced from style not impulse'

I disagree with this and honestly I think you know bugger all about the intention/motivation of the band, your assumptions are likely baseless. I don't like this (clearly), but I doubt it's contrived.

"what"
Source Tags is good, but a fair number of the things I think are off with this album apply to it just as much

I'm intrigued, what exactly do you mean? I used to jam Source Tags on the regular, it wore off me over the years but not sure I get the similarities, at least not musically.

Both of them tend towards emotionally overbearing vocal styles, very 'full', saturated melodies with 3rds galore (think Degausser and Relative Ways), and a general sense of being a Significant Album in both grandiose tone and sequencing. There are closer comparisons to be made with each album tbh, plus Brand New balances their dynamics better for the most part, whereas AYWKU... do a lot more with overdriven textures and general maximalism, but I do still hear the links...

I don't really understand that comparison but admittedly it's been a while since I've heard either album. I can accept that a general 'grandiose tone' could be a potential parallel to be drawn, beyond this point I'm lost.

This album has it's score not only due to the great songwriting and interesting textures, but also anytime I listen to this I'm immediately transported back to when I first heard it in college, thinking about leaves changing colours, the cute college girls, my naive mind. good times man. NOW EVERYTHING IS GRIM.

So, nostalgia. It’s fine if that’s why you like it, but that’s what that is.
