Neutral Milk Hotel, Bright Eyes, Bob Dylan...all have shite vocals, but they have something meaningful to say. Toby, even as the young adult he was on this album, had something to say.

In all due respect, this is Toby's worst vocal performance of his entire career (albeit motW's debut), but gotta cut him some slack considering age/experience/etc. I don't know if you've checked out Coffins on Io, but he's definitely been working on improving his vox in the best decade.

Hearing Toby sing live was the one the most beautiful things I've ever heard. The way he switched from sweet falsettos to frighting death growls was insane.

Just because I say someone isn't a good vocalist doesn't mean I don't like their vocals, Dylan being a case in point. I can't really call someone with no vocal talent a good vocalist.
Toby on the other hand can't sing and I can't stand his voice. Having said that, maybe if I loved this album/band the way most of you do I might feel a bit differently and warm to his vocals a bit more.

I understand that, I'm just saying that if you like their vocals, that means they're a good vocalist. It doesn't matter if they're technically off the mark, if you enjoy it, it's good for you.
I think we have a different mind set in that regard. I can quite comfortably say that a vocalist who's vocals I find enjoyable and suitable to the music isn't necessarily a good singer or a natural vocalist. But yeah it's still good for me I guess, I just wouldn't go around calling them a good vocalist.
I find it mind boggling how anyone can say Toby can sing fantastically well or indeed that his horrible cleans can soothe someone's soul but that's just me :]
