I'm guessing my previous avatar didn't look enough like a Lost Soul because no-one mentioned it. Maybe Cacodemons are just infinitely more fearsome, haha

That smile always made them less fearsome. Unlike the other demons they're just hanging out and having fun.
|
| |
But that smile is so mischievous. It's practically oozing that "would I kill you and eat your soul? No of course not, you can...trust me." feel.

The fact they're having a good time planning your gruesome demise actually makes them scarier, it's the sadistic smile of a ruthless killing machine hell bent on pursuing you till certain death.

Does Doom 3 have these guys? I played it for half an hour but then I got lost on a map and I haven't returned since.

I want to say yes, I'm almost sure they've appeared in every incarnation.
Edit: confirmed via the internets
P.S. Doom 3 is awesome, love the more horror-orientated vibe. Yeah it's not quite as fast paced as the others but it was a nice development at the time & we always have new Doom for a return to the old school feel.

Ye, Doom 3 was really good.
They ruined it on the Xbox 360 remaster though, having a light you could use whilst carrying a weapon.
Part of the paranoia of the original was deciding whether you wanted to see in the darkness or brave it.

Agreed, that was an unnecessary game-play change, the dynamic worked the way it was & made for a more tension filled horror-like experience. It didn't need revamping for the sake of convenience.

I still enjoyed it, just chose not to use the light.

Yep, same. I've played both versions & remember playing it the old fashioned way. I just recall how silly it was.
Man this is really making me want to play Doom 3 now, don't think I've even got a copy anymore.

It's not horrible, but it's so painfully tired and uninspired.
