Don't think I'll ever 5 this but it definitely has amazing moments. I still prefer Souvenirs though but this is probably above Kodama for me now. This one definitely works the best as an "album", more variety and a clearly more purposeful sequencing whereas the others I've heard feel a bit more just like a bunch of tracks thrown together.
Solar Song is the weak link here methinks, hopefully it'll grow on me but for now it holds the album back a bit for me.

True that.
Boney Solar Song is stunning, give it more listens.

It just feels a bit like filler to me; definitely the least memorable and most standard sounding shoegaze/dream pop styled thing here. But yeah imma keep listening to this for a good while, really great stuff.
What are people's favorite songs by them? Mine is Les Iris as of now.

Whenever I hear it I feel like the musical layers are swirling around me, it's so immersive and atmospheric. Compared to the opening 20 minutes it's less diverse sure, but it doesn't need to be imo

Fair enough. Maybe I should try listening to it in isolation.
I'm still really surprised at how much I like this band. Honestly I expected to hate them. Maybe it's just the hard shoegaze/dream pop mood I'm in lately but they just hit the spot so nicely.

They make some of the most beautiful music of the decade yea
They pretty much started modern blackgaze, albeit with more focus on the post-rock and shoegazing side.

I've still yet to hear any other blackgaze, but I do feel they'll be the peak of the genre for me because of that heavier emphasis on straight up shoegaze.

Check out An Autumn for Crippled Children, Lantlos, and Les Discrets' first album you might dig them too.
Hell you might even dig Deafheaven so give them a go if you wanna.

Why did you anticipate not liking this band?
Other blackgaze is harsher and more aggressive for the most part. You didn't ask but if you're at all curious I'd definitely recommend Deafheaven since they're the most popular, along with Lantlos, Heretoir, and maybe An Autumn for Crippled Children.
Alcest songwriter Neige is also involved in other projects that are lighter, and also worth checking out (Les Discrets, Amesoeurs, Sylvaine).
Edit: yeah what they said too

Deafheaven, Lantlos and Heretoir ended up on my shoegaze rec list so I'll be listening to those eventually.
Edit: and Amesoeurs too

Heretoir's new album is essential too if you dig this yeah.

Yeah new Heretoir is kind of reaffirming blackgaze for me in terms of doing new things with the genre among new releases, along with Kodama.

one more show me a dinosaur's album from last year was really good

Album Rating: 4.5
Why did you anticipate not liking this band?
Well, for one, the metal aspect. Aside from that, I have a (mostly unfounded) bias against the more "epic" "emotional" kind of rock stuff that a lot of people praise around these parts. I thought this band would be pretty but insubstantial.

Ah I see.
Show Me a Dinosaur looks sweet I'll check that out.

Yesssss that Show Me a Dinosaur album is sweet. Cold Body Radiation's first album is another essential blackgaze album that a lot of people forget about cause they suck now.

It got overlooked on the previous page so I'll ask again: what are people's favorite Alcest songs?
