oh i definitely get that, i have a lot of go-to albums for it already tbf. Maybe someday, but I mean, "Lovesong" is the best thing here to me and even, I like Anberlin's version more.

i dont really have the nostalgia goggles for this, it's really good but i feel like i expect way more from "consensus classics" than they usually provide.

@row: if you read through the context of why kin/the valley were made it becomes even more harrowing
and i'm not saying i dont see the emotion, it's obv there, i think what it is, is... it's not far enough removed from the usual 80s rock pastiches sound-wise (at times this style and especially later copycats like HIM veer close to almost a Bon Jovi if they wore a shit-ton of eyeliner kinda vibe, not a bad thing by any means but isn't as much my thing) to really stick out as a "classic" for me

“ Bon Jovi”
???!

I mean I get it his stepdad was a POS and he's mad about it. That's a real bummer. For me those albums aren't far enough removed from the usual 00s radio rock pastiches sound-wise to really stick out as a special.

idk maybe in 10 years i'll appreciate it as the classic it likely is, it's just kinda the "80s-y" flair to the sound doesn't lend itself as well to the themes as I'd like it to.
as for bon jovi it's a LOT more apparent with HIM (I mean Razorblade Romance had a working title of Slippery When Dead at some point) but the drums, etc. here sound so just, obviously mid-to-late-80s that it's a little hard to not think of other bands around the same timeframe.
