I dont care if they dont growl anymore just something like Sorceress'es title track with that heavy intro a mix of the styles again and to nail that signature Opeth magical atomsphere again. Though this to me is the record where they found their feet with the prog-rock and comfortable as themselves rather than "Mikaels love affair with the classic prog rock"

Agreed with everything you said. This is by far their best post-Watershed album imo and its not even close. The 2 before this suck and Heritage is really good but it doesn't have the magic that this one does for me.

Theres elements from Sorceress that are fucking great but its production is ass. The title track slaps hard as fuck, Era is catchy but Opeths an album band for me not cherry picking the good songs from new album. Im excited af for new material just bring back that atmosphere that they once had

Pale communion has some great highlights for me post watershed but still nowhere near something an monolithic as Ghost Reveries etc

Sorceress and Pale both have some good moments but are way too meh overall to ever be worth returning to in full.

^ though this has fallen off hard for me too. Basically no chance I reach for anything after Watershed unless it's time to confirm that I don't like it much.

Colourful and adventurous and full of heart.
To me this sounded like they had fun again for the first time in ages and that makes all the difference for my listening experience as well.

yeah, this album is (okay 'was') fun, I haven't revisited in ages to be fair
It was a marked improvement over the previous two for sure
Heritage is a nice vibe / good also, but almost doesn't feel 'Opethian'

This is the best post watershed opeth but it still falls short of damnation as far as prog rock peth goes. They've just lost that identity a little bit. Damnation was firmly opeth identity

Loved it a lot back then, but Damnation is now one of my least fave Opeth records, it's been falling down the ranks for years. Don't care for that particular style any more at all really.

Agreed. I’m not fussed for it anymore really. Unfortunate.

As much as I like Lopez for his groove and pocket playing, I'd love to hear how damnation would sound with axe's chops

Damnation is amazing and better than anything after GR tbh
This is better than PC and Sorceress for sure, which're still good but their low points. There’s plenty to love and appreciate but tracks 6, 8, and 10 keep me from thinking this is on the level of Heritage or Watershed, let alone the classics from before then.
Also the moments in the early songs where Akerfeldt goes overboard and cheeses things up; The "AAAAHHHH"ing in Dignity, that singing along with the outro, the vocal squeaks at the end of the verses in Heart in Hand, the first 20 seconds of Next of Kin, and the heavy outro which should've just been fully instrumental if I'm being nitpicky.

But Pika, you think everything in the world is better than Ghost Reveries.
Where would you place Damnation in their discog?
