Metallica and Maiden were neck in neck, popularity wise, throughout the 80's here in the US. Then Bruce and Adrian left the band in 1990. Less than a year after that, the Black Album was released.

The rest is history.

@Titan: Opening of TNOTB is filler. Seriously, stick Invaders in the middle of any other IM album and it's utterly forgettable. I have no idea why they chose that as the opening track and it may be a candidate for the worst opening track on any great album ever. I really suspect it was a leftover from the Di'Anno days. Its chorus is pretty awful. That album is actually much better if you swap the title track and Invaders in running order.

Which opener are we talking about? Invaders?cause that album has two tracklists nowadays...

Some tracklists from the remaster versions begin with the t/t and some begin with "run to the hills"

Solrage I think your out of your mind, and anyone else who doesn't enjoy Invaders. I get not enjoying the chorus - they could've done that part better (its only 4 words), but the rest of the song fucking rips. The vocals on the verses, THE BASS, the pace, Clive's drumming, the main riff....all brilliant.

Did I mention the bass?

Metallica sells out stadiums in the US as they're a much bigger act. It's not even a thought for Maiden.

Lol wut? Maiden plays in stadiums too, man.

Metallica has become mainstream unlike Maiden, which remains the greatest heavy metal band of all time, without radio help.
