I feel like by definition your favorite album has to be a 5

yeah...I dunno, at the time, I felt as though a 5 defined perfection
w/e clearly not important anymore seeing as I have like 25 or 30 5's

@Asleep: Because I associate people being really stingy over ratings with people being over critical, pedantic and petty just for the sake of it. Plus I don't like it when albums are put to a higher degree of love when you have memories associated with it, we're all human so it's bound to happen to some degree but I avoid it as much as possible. Nostalgia or memories affect almost none of my ratings, things I used to love and still have fond memories of I'll slap with a 2.5 without remorse if it has aged poorly.

I don't think Asleep is being pedantic for the sake of it or anything, he's one of th most genuine people I know here.
With that said, anyone who doesn't eventually 5 this has no heart ; )

@Sowing: If I went by the criteria of a 5 being perfection, I would only 5 one thing.

I mean when I said the above, the word 'basically' was key; had an interesting conversation with Blushful about this this morning actually, concluding that of course a 5 doesn't have to be perfect, but for me it has to be the height of musical enjoyment as I know it, which I've found only comes from a near perfect album (in a subjective sense) that I've lived with for a good period and that I've connected to in a way that I could never connect with an album on the first handful of listens (hence why I don't insta-5, not because of some stingy principle, just that nothing is ever going to be 5 worthy for me in that scenario)

There are a couple songs here that I don't love as much which hold this back a bit

Never said Asleep was, but I've seen and heard it too many times it's made me slightly jaded.

I TRIED COUNTING THE HIGHLIGHTS ON THIS ALBUM WITH MY HANDS BUT THEN I REALIZED I DIDN'T HAVE ELEVEN FINGERS

Maybe I phrased what I said poorly in using the word 'perfectly'. One of my 5s (Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial) is flawed, and not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it has that feeling that I was talking about previously. And when I was discussing 'that feeling', that wasn't nostalgia I was referring to, just that an album only impacts me in a 5-worthy way if I've stuck with it for a while. Obviously if my enthusiasm for it wanes, or that feeling vanishes, then it isnt a 5 for me anymore.
Also, 3k comments, whoo. Nice to hit it whilst having an interesting conversation

don't really have to defend your method of rating when there's staff like academy who have a dichotomous rating system of either a 5 or a 1
