absolutely. it's the perfect follow-up thematically and almost matches this for quality. it's less cathartic and visceral by design though so there's breathless praise for it

it's a solid 4. the key is not to compare it to this album or you'll be disappointed. but yeah it's not "essential" in the same way this album is

their debut is better (It Never Goes Out)

Hm, fair. I'm leaning toward a 4.5 on this so I'll probably give it a go.

Feel like it's kind of strange that I'm only now (in the last year or so) starting to get into emo, I imagine that's usually more of a teenage thing for most, though I guess it fits young adulthood well enough too.

this is an album about young adulthood problems with a teenage emo aesthetic. the qualities we loved in those warped tour bands but with serious issues. pretty much everyone posting in this thread is appreciating it through a young adult lens

Fair. I guess I previously just naively assumed all emo was written for teenagers. Stuff like this and Brand New definitely works very well for me at 22.

Kind of a random shout, but "Hosebroken" reminds me a lot of Death Cab's "Styrofoam Plates". Death Cab were actually the band that made me realize I might actually like emo, their early stuff was definitely quite emo and isthisbandemo.com approves them.

man if this was like 2008-era sputnik people would be all over boney for his liberal use of the word "emo" to describe certain bands

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
