this was so perfectly decent that I have no idea how it has a 4.3 avg.
thus continues the trend of me not really "getting" classic black metal albums. like yeah, it has good atmosphere. but can't the same be achieved without playing guitar licks that sound like a 13 year old wrote them? honestly some of the most basic metal guitar parts imaginable are on this album

This album is not about the riffs.

is Fade to Black by Metallica black metal? because a lot of Agalloch songs sound like bland, stripped down versions of Fade to Black.
Haaha ok I'm gonna go away now before I get permanently banned from this site

This album has more in common with post rock than it does metal. You might be looking at it from the wrong angle wanting it to be something it's not

yikes, I've listened to like three Burzum albums and not a fan at all. But I will try Darkthrone with an open mind!

When I first started listening to BM I had some idea in my head of what I thought it should be but mostly wasn't. I second Mayhem. Watch a few documentaries about the subject then jump into Deathspell Omega.

loving deathspell's sputnik bio:
"The band does NOT have a Myspace page, nor do they intend to have one."

imo hvis is the only burzum album that actually sounds like music

@ButtBoy: have you sampled some of the more melodic leaning BM bands? Dissection as the obvious starting point. I found them easier to get into. Immortal's 'In the Heart of Winter' is black/thrash & the riffs are very catchy. Then you have other progressive leaning stuff, new Cradle of Filth might work. DSO are awesome to & not typical of BM, experimental & weird with high grade production.
Essentially what I'm saying is the pure/raw typical BM stuff may not be the easiest entry point, just find what works by trying different things.

Thanks for the Dissection rec, genuinely enjoyed storm of the light's bane.
Mayhem however...the vocals on De Mysteriis are fucking hilarious and I have a fairly high tolerance for weird vocals. this is like borderline parody. Instrumentally great though.

i think you'll appreciate them more once ur more well acquainted with the genre. De Mysteriis is one of those albums that is so much better on revists down the line
