re-listened to this yesterday. Ready for their next album to blend this sound more in with their old sound.

i feel people have essentially alienated them from ever going back to a more black metal sound, i can really see people pointing out to this album and dismissing anything BM sounding as just a gimick from them, that would make me not wanna deal with that shit.

Hasn't the band always been shit on by the BM community for not being trve BM? I dont think their fans will give AF if they fuck around and mix their old and new sounds. Definitely wont be written off as a gimmick when it is literally how they have always been.

The BM community is a terrible collective of individuals tbh

I think people need to finally as a collective view things for what they are and not as “pussy metal” as KILL would call it or “not truth bm” as some would call it. That idea is really putting yourself on a pedestal. Who cares what it is or isn’t?

annoying tryhard metalbr0s are to be ignored entirely. And I don't think anyone could bully them away from bm, especially when they got so much acclaim from being controversial with sunbather in the first place.

All that really matters is the band has enough fans to sustain their existence and revenue from world tours and merch. Any controversy and noise from detractors doesn’t really matter if those needs are being met, and if anything probably is beneficial in the long run. The age old adage of all publicity is good publicity. Same principle applies to a stand-up comedian.
Also the number of people who enjoy genre-bending in metal, bands such as this, Alcest, Deftones, Opeth, etc. have grown in numbers over the last decade since Sunbather initially dropped.

you mean a boring retread of what wittr and weakling already did?

Feels disingenuous to reduce Deafheaven down to what WITTR and Weakling already did, especially when that really hasn't been true since Roads to Judah -Sunbather, if we're being generous. Weakling obviously didn't stick around and WITTR moved on to both more synth-based atmospheric stuff, and more traditional sounding black metal stuff. There's definitely some overlap in spots, but it's a criticism that I think is grossly overblown as a fan of all three.
Also, I know it's the natural order of things but old man me remembers when WITTR were shit on for not being "trve" enough and only a bad Weakling ripoff lol

>but old man me remembers when WITTR were shit on for not being "trve" enough and only a bad Weakling ripoff lol
yea bm fans are actually imbeciles its true
why listen to wittr when you can listen to a shitty band that sounds like a vomited up ripoff of a band that sounds like transilvanian hunger but not as good
stay tuned for my new review!

I never return to anything by them. Maybe I should spin Sunbather again? I at least see the appeal
