I've been reading it as "cold dark piece" up until now. Wow

I feel like this band has become increasingly distant over the course of our thirteen year relationship and it's no longer the person I fell in love with.

The problem is that its all the same old tricks we've already heard from them. I get so many moments of deja vu on this record. They used to take risks. also the lyrics used to be fun and interesting, and now theyre more mundane.

But you guys gotta admit that Roots Remain is top tier. I feel like Brann really came into his own as a vocalist on this album. They need to use him more often.

"They need to use him more often."

They have used him quite a bit over the last few albums man.

the fans that swear by the first 2 albums will never agree with you

Mastodon will never again be that band and that's what pisses them off

He is used on most of the songs here actually.
Problem is, trying to drum at that level and still give a decent vocal performance live is hard.

That’s not what pisses me off tbh. I love The Hunter but the past 2 just ain’t doing it for me.

Brann is actually used too much these days imo

Agreed, Source.
He has become their main singer at this point. I understand that his range allows for some songs that Hinds or Sanders may not.

Also, The Hunter still rules.

nah, Leviathan and The Hunter are tied for my favorite Mastodon records. i dont long for a return to their old ways, thats not the problem with this album.

I kinda agree with Source; it does feel like Brann is used a bit too much nowadays.

My biggest problem with their newer stuff is that the albums no longer have distinct sounds, The Hunter onwards has been so samey, just different degrees of songwiritng quality

A song from Crack the Skye would sound out of place on Emperor whereas a song from The Hunter could belong on any of the last two and not sound out of place.

yes it would, because the band were using their freshest and most inspired ideas when it came to their new style.

edited for continuity.

btw, that argument i presented includes the premise that The Hunter is just like the last two for argument's sake, but i dont even agree with that. i think The Hunter was a lot weirder and more colorful. they sounded like they were having fun on that record. the last two are so by-the-numbers.
