> what makes the band better than, let's say... Exodus, Kreator, Sepultura, etc.?

for one, most thrash (exodus is different) wouldnt exist in the first place without em

for two, the fact that they have actual memorable songwriting, interesting moments etc.

i used to think the way you do, but revisiting a bunch of that stuff lately, it simply doesnt hold up. its just dumb simple metal. check sadus tho

Metallica for me has always been strong in terms of their ability to write good individual parts but honestly their song structuring has always been pretty suspect. Lots of repetition of exact parts that don't contribute anything the second time through, some boring riffs played ad infinitum (Disposable Heroes), some songs feeling a little aimless especially on And Justice For All

Still a good band but for their good qualities that may have contributed to their larger popularity, they have flaws that make them less interesting than Kreator, Sepultura, Slayer, ect. Ride The Lightning is sick af though

on some level i can kind of agree with you. the part where i dont agree with you, is that 90% of thrash is actually way worse in the same regards you mentioned, especially kreator and sepultura lol

and justice's production isn't even the only problem, the debut had shit production compared to the other albums but the songwriting on and justice was bleh and the riffs blend together. no bass, which sucks ass. i know its supposedly funny to some fans but i think the band is retarded for turning down the bass

lol

once again, i would be willing to concede this opinion, if you were to agree that the same is true for 90%+ of thrash

hey Eons, I watched this documentary recently called "Murder in the Front Row" it's all about the Bay Area thrash scene and its beginnings. Might give you a bit of insight of how Metallica got their early propulsion. I saw it on Amazon Prime Video, not sure if it's available in every region though.

I'd mostly attribute it to them being one of the first to get a record deal, and full length album out. Helps too that KEA had good production. In addition to all their gigging, and also the scene seemed to really support one another. A bunch of bands in the Bay Area were all really good friends for many years, and really enjoyed each others' music.

Will give another spin to this :| wip

Atlas Rise, this one, i like.

Confusion is my fav. ManUNkind & Heres Comes Revenge are pretty good.

But, there is a fair amount of fillers in there

For me, Disk2 is stronger than Disk1

Rating bonus 0.5 for the excellent Special Edition Disk3

Generous, yep a little ;)

Same. I give it one listen when it came out, and then I forgot about it completely. I remember pretty much liking it

AJFA is probably their best, or second best behind Ride the Lightning
