With respect to the substantive issues, I'm also skeptical that a lot of what is labelled art today (the sort of works Gyro was alluding to) is in fact art.



But I don't think that entails that these works are worthless. They might be valuable forms of expression or social commentary, forms that happen to use visual (or performative etc) media. That is, one might distinguish mere expression/commentary through visual media from expression/commentary in visual media that also possess whatever further characteristics are required for full-blooded art. Further, denying these works the label "art" does not entail that these works lack positive aesthetic properties. After all, sun sets are beautiful but they are not art.



All that to say, settling whether these works count as art might be important for certain purposes, but settling that question seems to leave a lot of other questions open, questions about the overall worth, aesthetic or otherwise, of these works. And so there might be more important debates about these works to be had than whether they count as art.

agreed hard. that's what i ultimately came to concede in this debate, is that there would be too many questions as to what constitutes art and what doesn't, the distinctions would be too challenging and it would boil down to subjectivity. i realize now it would be too hard to say with objectivity what is and isn't art, but it's something that's always intrigued (and frustrated) me. however this: "Further, denying these works the label "art" does not entail that these works lack positive aesthetic properties.
