Ha with Ryus, there’s something so awesome about the idea of this album but it’s just a bit too long/draggy. Still tho some amazing music, especially at its peaks

4.4s are for incestuous chickenbois

whole point of this album is that it's an oversaturated big meltingpot ideahaven it would suck if it were anything more than 5seconds shorter and none of it drags

I can get how overstuffedness is kinda the m.o., but yeah idk def get sorta lost by album’s middle before the big finish (Altho I don’t /love/ the reprise-y closer)

Design : 1 is where the best bit starts I despair

also closer is probably top 5, that reprise is probably the best pure gaze bit here. first half of the song is a bit weaker but it rounds things off the way they needed to be rounded off if you yeah

obviously a Procrustean bed but this feels very of a piece with “RYMcore” in 2020, in my heart of hearts makes sense to me why it’s sort of an Internet(-only?) phenomenon. For this and other reasons it’s really cool that it came out in 2003. But def has the sort of structural “prog” element and sounds (I’m sayin it!) sorta anime/Japanese-ish. Very special album, been listening to it a ton and still feel like I have many many listens to go. Plus as I said the peaks are absolutely incredible. None of my handwaving generalizations matter in the face of the melody for “from the way that I feel” on “chocolate matter”

I'd love to hate this band but not even I can.

I like the other album more because it's fun, this however is just in a dick measuring contest with wolfgang amadeus mahler for the title of god of music. but it's a dick I liek

I knew you in particular would deny that this sounds animeish, and you’re probably in a better position to judge than I am all told. I think I can’t let go of the feeling that a sort of breathy low voiced guy and a lady with a sorta delicate pretty voice singing the same melody an octave apart has that effect (see, for a random example, “Lucy” by goodfight), but still would love to hear other takes. I think there’s something there that’s timbral/about how the instruments sound that makes it fit nicely into the RYM-luvs-Japan vibe

Then again this doesn’t matter and I’m sort deprecating music I like through saying it. Still tho it’s got a little sumn there

Might also just be a more very general affective “sense of wonder” type vibe that I think people associate with the (putative?) escapism of like Ghibli and summa the more accessible/prominent anime thangs and I’m projecting based on that lol

Some of the chromatic shi in the chords + bitcrush tone choices kinda reminds me of some Japanese artists, but most of those are shibuya-kei groups who were drawing from every genre they could claw at, so it's hard to say. here is a cute track from a group in that field that is maybe what we both mean minus the dual vox: www.youtube.com/watch?v=67dexBmeBFc

I'd say (as with most of all comparisons with Japanese music yada yada y'know the score) that the anime associations are pretty tangential
