The songwriting and instrumentation here is a lot more stripped-down (you might even say dumbed-down) compared to their 80s material, but that's also true of the black album and everyone seems to like that one just fine. Surely no one is being influenced by their childhood nostalgia for the big hits off of that album though!

megadeth don't get as much hate for selling out because they 1) were just trying to out-do metallica at their own game and 2) they were very not good at it anyway
|
| |
Yup. At least tallica *successfully* sold out lmao
|

Also these bumps got me to re-listen to the singles off this and yep Ain't My Bitch is still their best song post-80s. Not really all that close either.

I'd almost argue Megadeth sold out harder than Metallica. They literally went the route they did in the 90s because they watched Metallica's success doing it... and I'd argue albums like Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, and Risk are far more salaciously radio leaning than Load/Reload/Garage Inc despite the latter albums being far more successful/having the singles that actually made the radio.
Metallica did it first, and they did it better, which is why they get all the shit for it while everyone forgets Megadeth stooped even lower. The mainstream went Metallica, and Megadeth went mainstream.

damn yall said all the same things i was gonna say as i typed that comment rip
Also think that a huge reason why these 90s Metallca albums are considered to be so "commercial" is because they basically created and are still the standard for all things butt-rock. People have gone on and on about how influential the 80s albums were, but butt-rock/metal bands are still plagiarizing these 90s albums nearly 25 years later.

Outro riff to Outllaw Torn from Caterpillar March by Kyuss. Toured together ‘93.

I have insane nostalgia for "Hero Of The Day". I used to get so pumped when the video would come on MTV.

MrAlex is very correct. The Black Album is still the staple for all things redneck butt rock. And thank you for acknowledging the fact that Youth, CW, and CtE are all sellout attempts at going mainstream, even if they’re (moslty) quite good! Megadeth dickriders will say “oh yeah so what, Megadeth only sold out ONE TIME as an experiment and then got right back to the thrash!” You think Youthenasia is thrash? You think TWNAH is thrash? And so what if Risk was “an experiment” (I don’t buy that), that means it doesn’t count as a sellout attempt? That it should get some pass?
Ive had this arguement a million times sonce 1996, and I still encounter bozos today who will try to tell me “Fuck Metallica for selling out, Megadeth ALWAYS stayed true to thrash!” I’ll admit 90’s Megadeth got pretty good, but thrash? So stupid.

Ronnie is like a bad Primus cover, but the rest of those songs are excellent. Wasting My Hate too.
