Not to mention, Metallica has always played way faster live then they do on actual albums, which may or may not be because of Lars unknowingly pushing the tempo (then again a lot of metal bands play faster live on purpose). I don't think Lars is horrible, but honestly it's pathetic how the dude obviously doesn't even practice unless he's rehearsing with the band, and how he is only a shell of what he once was in the 80's/90's, when in reality he should be playing better then he has ever played (like every other drummer his age who actually stuck with it).

Also the way he displaced the Ride cymbal on his drum set really pissed a lot of drummers off, and gets a little extra hate from the drumming community for that too (which is some more fuel to the fire that is his infamous St. Anger snare).

Lars used to be great, now he just fucks up the beats live by adding too much unnecessary things that just ruin the feel of the song, while being totally unimpressive too. like basic rolls on snare every 3 seconds, or just changing up the beats too often when he really shouldn't. oh and for god's sake somebody should steal all his china cymbals, seriously. and ofc, his double bass playing has been pretty bad for yeeeaaars now.

Yeah the fact that he hasn't really ever hit a ride cymbal since MOP is annoying in and of itself, and plays pretty basically, and sometimes even off-time live. But as people have been saying, stuff like Fight Fire With Fire, and all of MOP and AJFA has some fantastic drumming and fills. It was mainly generic hard rock drumming starting with Black Album though. He's no Lombardo or Menza, that's for sure.

Aside from the drumming, he has a reputation for being kind of a dick at times, though I haven't seen much evidence of this from interviews. The most reprehensible thing he's done though is apparently be solely responsible for the decision to turn Jason's bass playing extremely low on AJFA. Forget the remastering on the first two albums they've been doing, they need to fix how AJFA sounds already.

Imo what Lars was doing on the Black Album, Load, and ReLoad was pretty much perfect for what Metallica was going for on those albums.

According to the producer of AJfA, he's also (if I remember right) responsible not only for the drum sound and lack of bass, but the crappy guitar sound, too. I think he hit the knobs or w.e to get his perfect drum sound in the mix and it made everything else sound like junk. And they'll never remix it because now because Spotify streaming makes them tons of cash and they dgaf.

I agree with what you guys are writing. But personally, I'm ok with his playing on the albums that matter (first five). And Metallica's weakest material isn't due to Lars' playing anyway.

However, remove Lars from the equation and you probably have another Diamond Head; i.e. maybe an album at the level of Kill 'em All and that's it.

People complain too much about Kirk and his wah pedal, but the solos with the wah pedal are the best solos on here.
