Before Mayhem, Dead was the vocalist for thrashy blackened death metal band Morbid

I'm in the middle of reading Lords of Chaos right now. Black metal has the most interesting history of any other genre, imo.

The Death Archives is a recently written book by Necrobutcher concerning early Mayhem and the second wave black metal scene. Unsurprisingly, from what I've read, it's probably more insightful than Lords of Chaos. Unfortunately it's unavailable in the US

Can't really verify this cuz I've only read parts of it, but some of the OG dudes from the scene have torn that book up and denounced it as inaccurate trash.

@Mike sensationalised for sure, almost all the 'satanic" stuff was done for shock value, there's a small minority of legit (or at least claiming to be legit) 'satanists' but the rest was just thematic and most of those bands have acknowledged that. There was a lot of deaths/murders and suicides within the scene though, like more than the well talked about ones.

Lords of Chaos is trash, there are far better black metal books to read for good insight.
The Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult series of books is a good read, as is Only Death Is Real by Tom Warrior on the history of Hellhammer, and several books that come with album releases or boxsets are great too. For a really detailed and reliable history on Norway, I recommend reading the book that comes with Darkthrone's Black, Death and Beyond boxset. And of course, for insight on the early scene almost worldwide but focused on Europe, it is absolutelt essential to read the full book of Metalion's collected Slayer Mag diaries.

The dude who writes those Evolution of the Cult books always seems to really know his shit in interviews and actually cares about details/accuracy. I should really check the books soon.

There are still some excellent interviews in Lords of Chaos. Definitely readable, if somewhat sensationalist.
