For a while I preferred Alligator over this album, but now I think I prefer this one. They're both pretty much on equal ground, though.

The band also have enough good B Sides to compile an album's worth of material almost as strong as the big 3 which is just crazy really

sad songs and alligator are both underappreciated. Boxer is just alligator + accessibility

Alligator was the first album of theirs I heard and I had them filed as just an above average band based on that, a really patchy album. It's their most diverse album I guess which can be appealing. On Boxer they found their true voice though, sounds a hundred times more confident/purposeful

If I had to sum up Alligator in one word I'd say 'directionless'

I've still got it rated as a 4 because there are some great songs on there and it has grown on me over time, it's just the other three are all hard 5's.

Saw the band at Alexandra Palace, London last year - wasn't expecting them to be that incredible live. Sure enough, my favourite live performance of all time, insanely good

It was the first one I listened to and I didn't get the feeling the band had really figured out a clear identity by the end of it. I think since that album they've tightened up the compositions, the albums feel unified and each has a strong and unique atmosphere, plus the lyrics have improved massively from alligator.
