I tend to listen to this more than Oceanic but it doesn't mean it's the better of the two. It's like how I don't usually listen to The Eye of Every Storm but when I do, I'm always blown away

EOES is a grower and jams soooooo hard after not hearing for awhile!

And on the notion of this being "prog", I'm down with that.

How isn't this prog tho? It pushed the boundaries pretty far when it came out.

The mindset that prog = 10 mins of scale runs, jazz influenced key changey metal is pretty limiting. Prog in itself is a mindset/philosophy, not a genre. Just like "technical metal" isn't a genre but an umbrella term to refer to bands who make techy music.

By that logic, anything can be prog dude. I agree it's more of a mindset/philosophy, but for taggin purposes, we gotta consider prog as a genre.

truth. of course this is forward-thinking/"progressive" in nature, but it basically has nothing in common with what most people consider "prog metal" besides odd time signatures

Idk Keyblade I just feel like restricting prog to bands that sound like DT is anti-innovatory. I don't see how it being a genre and being defined by "pushing the sonic boundaries of metal" are somehow mutually exclusive. DT pushed boundaries, but only in one direction-towards Jazz and 70s prog rock. This just pushes the boundary in a different way.
