That’s an interesting observation. What songs have the organ where it’s detrimental? I don’t quite remember, haven’t jammed in a while.

Really curious about what the next album is gonna sound like tbh. As I said earlier, it seems like the band have slowly started regaining their metal side with each of their vintage prog albums (sans Pale Communion), so I guess we'll see if they continue in that direction or not

kinda nice that these guys didn't completely fall off after doing this for so long

I still think this albums a good sign for things to come from them. We wont get anything like the old death metal again but I think they have found their feet with the new sound, balancing metal+prog rock. Who knows maybe Mikael will just throw a wild card and next album will be some worship of some jazz artist from the 70s
I wish we got a few more songs that where like Sorceress, with the heavy intro, red rocks version of that tracks incredible.

The albums a bit crap but the song itself is pretty cool for me at least for newer Opeth

Their 2010s material was mostly very good but I wish there was less cheese and those moments of oversinging/a capella stuff. And when they incorporate the metal I feel like it doesn’t sound right or too inspired to me, especially moments of Sorceress, which might’ve also been a production issue since Red Rocks sounds much better with that stuff. But none of these problems were present at all in their classic period. They should either return to that dense progressive metal style or evolve in a lighter direction imo.

Bonus tracks are good, my fav being The Mob. That one’s around the same level as the album highlights.

i think it's definitely their best prog rock record, it's a shame i've really not been into their prog rock direction much. each album since has had the occasional brilliant moment but surrounded by uninteresting passages. this is definitely their most consistent effort since watershed. maybe i should give it some more spins but i never wanted to go back to it.
