'Post punk and noise rock albums have been getting called terrifying as long as I’ve been listening to music and at some point the hyperbole starts to feel a little silly. This is a modern and fresh take...' (2)
I'm cutting it off there, because I don't actually like this, so it's not 'awesome'... but the guy has a point that this isn't as revolutionary as some would like to claim and the whole crossover appeal angle is fuelling the hype machine.

Dissonant noises and spoken out of key vocals. Spooky!

I think the main problem for me is not that this was supposedly a 'groundbreaking' or 'master piece' album, but that it got this hype as a 'scary album' that many called it a 'horror movie soundtrack', terrifying music that 'gives your ears PTSD' and stuff and it just... not that.
It's not scary, terrifying music. It's not abrassive, it's not twisted, it's not opressive music. Yea it's dark and quirky and noisy, but does never once live up to the reputation it got build-up by the internet hype and worst thing is i probably would've enjoyed this way more if i went blind into it, cuz the hype literally killed any enjoyment i could've gotten from this.
also if this gives your ears ptsd LMAO, you a bitch.

People talking about this like it's the most terryfing album of all time or something, lmao.

I never found it terrifying, but I thought it was really aggressive and unsettling in its own way. That being said, its all based on a subjective experience -> hype levels -> expectations that are almost impossible to fulfill. It's always an issue when an album gets a lot of traction since people who try to approach it go into it knowing its reputation. Basically, social factors are forcing you to view it a certain way that you may never get and it can ruin an album.
Daily morning ramble from MarsKid woop woop. Reminds me a lot about well-liked movies that get a ton of attention, hard to ignore the positive/negative reception.

why the fuck do people still base their enjoyment of an album on what other people say about it? it's like when Babadook came out, early reviews called it the scariest movie since x, and then inevitably a lot of people were super let down. drown out all the noise and enjoy art for what it is. god damn people. stop caring so much about the hype

I mean, it's happened to me before dude. Sometimes it's hard to avoid when the hype reaches all around you--you're basically destined to consciously or subconsciously perceive a given product in a certain light, like you're waiting for it to impress you/let you down. I agree, it's important to try and tune that out, but it's not always easy.

this album is the fun type of dark/spooky, not the terrifying type

sorry, but expectations influence people. that' how it is. Especially because i like the sort of music this was being compared to. I like abrassive, difficult, scary music. I was expecting something out of this that i didn't get.
And of course now y'all like 'i never said that', like that disprooves the massive amount of hype this got.

I didn’t know about the hype until after I heard this. Just always been a big daughters fan and thought it was a great album and a great progression for them. Also it was cool to see them back after like almost a decade. Then it got super hyped up and I was like yeah this is a good album to hype.

its a new and fresh take on the noise rock genre. I don't find it particularly scary but it sure as hell keeps me on toes the whole way through and every time I listen to it I am thoroughly satisfied.
