It's weird to me how Metallica ever got so much attention. How did they exactly? I mean they were not really ever special, just my opinion. In fact they aren't even top 5 in their own genre of thrash metal. But they are more popular and richer than any other band in the Thrash genre. Why?

Yeah, RTL and MoP rule
|
| |
those aren't answers though, what makes the band better than, let's say... Exodus, Kreator, Sepultura, etc.?
|
| |
none of those bands have a mastermind like lars

if by better you mean more appealing to a larger amount of people its because they wrote music that was more melodic and catchy while still retaining a fair amount of intensity

The only song I've heard from this album was Now That We're Dead, and that's only because the Undertaker was riding a motorcycle to it right before he murdered three men on national television.
The song sucks.

Consider myself a fairly big Metallica fan and I've still not listened to anything off this four years later. Am I missing out?

Some genuinly great songs here and many filler. Disc one slays, disc two has most filler. The closer is one of their best songs since the 80s, that's something everyone can agree on. Give it a shot!

If you liked Death Magnetic you might love this. If you disliked it, you will hate this. It is as simple as that, no further analysis required.

spit out the bone is their best song since like king nothing

That doesn't say much, Fuel isn't that good, imo

I feel like this is quite different from DM though. The songs aren't as ridiculously lengthy. Of course they're still similar in some regards, but this one has more of the Black Album and Load/Reload flavor thrown into the mix. That being said I usually only listen to disc 1 and SOTB. That's short and sweet

I never said they're the same. It just feels to me they established a sound and a formula in terms of songwriting in death magnetic, which they continued to explore in this record

True though, they do the riff x 4 thing very often. I still like this so much more than DM though, even though that record had some good songs

DM has grown off of me big time (which isn't a good thing when talking about the longevity) but i still prefer it over this one.

Having heard a full run through, I'll say Metallica's songwriting slips when it comes down to conciseness. The Metallica of Lightning/Puppets knew how to make 6-8 minute songs not boring.
Metallica of 2008/2016 is like "end the fucking song already!"
