He needs to be merged with Akerfeldt, agreed.

I listened to pale communion last night and I don't get what all the hate is about

Also damnation rules

Damnation is probably 10th best but Windowpane is better than anything on Deliverance, Heritage, or the rest of Damnation

What about In My Time Of Need? That song is fantastic

That's probably 2nd best on there, Lullaby is great too but after those three it kind of goes downhill. The rest is still good though

Yeah, Damnation and Pale Communion are the only Opeth records I've listened to (besides the first half of BWP), where should I go next?

Listen to BWP in its entirety, this or Heritage. But in the end you should check the whole discography, all albums are worth hearing.

All about context

Finish BWP, that's their best. If you like that then I'd go with My Arms, Your Hearse, then Still Life, and maybe go back to Orchid and Morningrise (their first two and very different sounding from the rest). Then go in order starting with Deliverance

Agreed, you need to listen to the BWP - Still Life - MAYH trifecta first. Go from there depending what you end up liking better - the modern aspects or the older songwriting approach.
How exactly does one end up starting on Opeth with Damnation/PC?

New fans or people just checkin em out should listen to this first imo, perfect mix of their prog/dm dynamics
|

It's not that PC or Heritage is necessarily bad, it's just that if I'm interested in listening to Prog-Rock there's more than enough good bands out there. That genre doesn't need a "revival".

I started with those because I heard they were lighter and more prog rock oriented and since I couldn't get into BWP I thought their lighter stuff would appeal to me more and it did.

Not huge into metal so the death metal of their older stuff hasn't clicked with me yet.
|
| |
Yeah, I'm exactly the opposite. Demon of the Fall is my fav. Opeth song and I rarely ever even have those.

This is a fine balance between aggression and mellowness. Has some great jazzy interludes as well. It's a brilliant album, check the baying of the hounds to get a taste
