I'm not so sure about looking forward to the next Metallica album... Lars said this about the new album:

"It definitely sounds like METALLICA. It's probably a little less frenetic than the last record. The last one [producer] Rick Rubin really encouraged us to for the first time be inspired by our past. It was the first time we sort of looked in the rearview mirror. This time around it's a little bit of a different thing. We're not working with Rick, we're working with the engineer from the last record, who's producing, Greg Fidelman. So there's some of the same production elements at play, but we're expanding a little bit on the sonics. It's probably a bit more of a diverse record than the last one. It's exciting, but I don't have quite the perspective yet."

Key words... 'Less frenetic'. I didn't know Death Magnetic was frenetic to begin with...

Has anyone found links to the files they used for Guitar Hero: Metallica? They're apparently not compressed or overly loud like they are on the album.

Interesting, more diversity is usually good. I'm expecting it to sound the most like Black Album or the better parts of Load, and expanding on the sonics could be cool.

There really aren't any better parts of Load. If they wanted to hit up the Black album for inspiration, I'd probably be able to listen to that.

Nope. I can listen to 'Until It Sleeps' and even 'Unforgiven II', but there's nothing else on either album that interests me.

Yeah Until It Sleeps is probably the best song on there.

Yeah wtf is with the "frenetic" bit? There was nothing frenetic about DM whatsoever.

What I do find funny is that Fidelman was the guy Slayer first went to when working on Repentless and he kinda just strung em along and left them high and dry to work on some other project. I wonder if it was the new Metallica album lol

Can someone who knows a lot about drumming tell me what's so awful about Lars' playing?

It's that he's particular bad, it's just that he never practices and nothing he does is really impressive.

he usually plays uninteresting, generic beats or sometimes beats that just don't sound good with the song. he's not particularly technical or fast, and often live he will make a rhythm simpler or even completely change it because he can't play it like he did in the '80s.
one thing I can give Lars props for is that his fills are usually pretty creative, at least in the old days. it's generally fairly easy when listening to rock and metal to spot where a drum fill is going to be and what it might sound like, but even after years of listening to Metallica I still screw up some fills because they can be quite unconventional. at least for the type of straightforward thrash they play.
