Fire above, ice below is really underrated. Might be the best song and John hates it apparently

Apparently John also think Ashes is "definitely the worst album we have made", which is really interesting since it's regarded by many fans as their best.
It's also apparent that due to him thinking Ashes was "too polished" led to the straight to tape analog recording of their follow up Marrow which has a drastically more natural/raw sound to it.

Yeah i talked to his wife at a show one time and told her this was my favorite and she seemed to have the same opinion as John. She was talking up pale folklore which I like... but this album is clearly better. Objectively. Lol

Haven't heard pale all the way through yet but didn't think it was in this level
|

It's nowhere near this level.
|

Correct, its better.

If I were to rank Agalloch myself:
The Mantle > PF=Ashes > Marrow > S&S

Album Rating: 4.5
Pale Folklore > Ashes > The Mantle > Marrow > Serpent
None are below a 4.5 for me though. Pretty much anything John is involved in I love.

Hm, I'd say Mantle>Pale Folklore>Ashes>Marrow>Serpent, although if we include ep's The White tops all for me.

I listened to the Mantle start to finish last night and as much as I love it, I feel like it starts to fall apart in the second half. It opens really strong but somewhere in the middle to end it just starts kind of trailing off for me more than their other albums. Still an excellent album, and got me into Agalloch, but it is more flawed IMO then the majority seems to think.

I can really just get lost in The Mantle, not so much with their other work. But this album is still awesome.

The Mantle has no weaknesses. This one has The Grain.

The Mantle is nearly flawless.
