havent heard it in a good few years now. the chronic kinda took over in that time. burnt this out during my childhood/teens, but it's so damn good coming back to it. never really appreciated the production back then either damn

There are some good tracks on this one, but when it comes to hip hop I don't think gangsta rap is my thing.

"2001 > The Chronic"

I don't think people either fully realize or respect how good 2001 is. This album boasts so many nuanced production and mixing techniques that I'm astounded by its lack of consideration as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Aside from the obvious fact that it wouldn't really fit in with today's modern style of hip-hop production, I still contend that sound- and crispness-wise this thing would knock people off their feet if it were released today and it's 16 years old. Every single track is a masterpiece in hip-hop production. Just listen to Xxplosive, for instance. It's the same looped kick-snare pattern, guitar lick, and bassline throughout the ENTIRE track, yet the extra little percussive layering Dre adds on throughout the song give that one repetitive loop such a progressive feel. Drum- and bass-wise, too, this album is so many leagues above any other hip-hop album I've heard that it's almost embarrassing. For its stellar production and mixing alone, 2001 should be lauded as one of the all-time greats and it's baffling to me that it's not.
