The Orchard just goes so absolutely hard
|
| |
The Orchard is SOTY for me. Still forming my opinion, but -- while I don't think this is their best album, it's so good. I think it slots in around middle for me:
Fortress - Palimpsest - Volition - Within - Scurrilous - Kezia - Pacific Myth
... but I LOVE Kezia. Cannot think of another band with such a consistent discography. They have never put out anything less than great. My favorite band tbh.

It's also interesting to see how many people just dislike the vocals. Of course, taste is subjective at the end of the day, but I think by most "objective" standards, Rody has to be one of the greatest metal vocalists of the century.
Especially when he was younger, on Fortress & Scurrilous, the range, power, screams, growls, and creativity he brought to the table has rarely if ever been matched. "Bloodmeat" is insane. He also has a knack for earworm-y vocal melodies that is uncommon in metal (the singalongs on The Orchard, Mist, Turn Soonest, countless other examples).
And, he has real personality and expressiveness. This is what few singers really achieve IMO even when technically proficient.
I just think if you compare Rody to his contemporaries (Tommy from btbam, the mastodon guys, the tesseract guys, gojira...), he has to be considered among the best by any reasonable standard. For metal I think you have to start looking at people like Courtney laplante or Sam from architects for people who impact the sound of band as much from a vocal perspective. You could put Devin Townsend and spencer sotelo in there too.

Scurrilous over Kezia is CRAZY work my dude

I think Rody improved his technique massively last years, it shows here, more melodical, so ofc it's less raspy and off the walls and thus sounds worse paradoxically because it's less balls to the walls like, idk, Kezia/Fortress. but from a technique standpoint you can hear he matured heaps.

Rody is a very very talented vocalist, he even can have a hint of Dio in his tone. That being daid his vocals can be a bit over the top sometimes.
@cosmo
Sam Carter (Architects) was a very good vocalist and had a lot of range, but his voice has been thrashed over the years and he found a comfortable spot and stayed there for the most part. Your metalcore examples arent the best but i can see where you are coming from.
Devins voice is a behmoth of skill and technique and can carry songs by itself and Devin just oozes personality
