Honestly I'd probably rank this in the bottom half of their discog but it's still pretty good. There are some riffs that seem pretty run of the mill for their standards

It's just a weird sensation when people have a lightbulb moment with a band you've been stanning for years because of a new album, and the said new album is at best middle-of-the-pack in their discog
Like "yeah that's what I've been talking about"..."wait no I meant with their other albums" lol

Like I'm less talking shit about this album and moreso just confused that people are holding it above so much of a near-flawless discog

It does seem like some albums just get cherry picked randomly to heap praise on lol. I do think this album sounds great though. The production is nice

I'm finishing up a discog run and I think this definitely lands in my top 5, but in the fifth spot. On first run I think this is how they're shaking down for me:
1. Here in After
2. Close to a World Below
3. Dawn of Possession
4. Shadows in the Light
5. Descent
6. Unholy Cult
7. Majesty and Decay
8. Failures for Gods
9. Acts of God
10. Atonement
11. Harnessing Ruin
12. Kingdom of Conspiracy

I guess this is technically bottom half for me but that's not saying shit because the worst Immo is a 7/10

I just feel more vitriol here compared to their other recent stuff. That's the magic touch for the Immo formula.

I'd take Here In After, Close to a World Below, Unholy Cult, Majesty and Decay, Atonement, and maybe Acts of God over this.
I just ran their whole discography. I really liked Majesty and Decay and Atonement. The songs were modern and catchy without losing any of the Immolation signature sound, even magnifying it in certain ways. Here In After was phenomenal.

Adversary, Attrition, Host, and Descent are peak Immolation tracks for sure

I always thought Shadows in the Light was super underrated. A 3.5 here is ridiculous.

This is an interesting topic beyond Immo...when a band is deep in their career and have a firmly established sound, does that make them stale? What does it take for them that their albums remain relevant?
This is clearly more of the same but it does sound fresh and exciting to me. I also think that some aspects are more pronounced here than in the past. Like a certain tribal and playful note to the drumming in slower parts...

most bands this deep their career are on auto-pilot to a point or at the least set in a formula. immo are no different, its just that their formula is a pretty sick one. this def doesnt try anything new or different, at least to my ears, but does it need to? as long as the performances and songcraft still feel like there's effort put in, i think its all good. you shouldnt expect a band this deep to throw many curveballs, and those that do are the exception not the rule. otherwise every metal band who's been around over a decade would be put in the woodchipper

I wouldn't say they're on autopilot. They're still creating interesting riffage and an atmosphere that most dm bands can only dream of creating. There's a reason why these guys are considered a cream of the crop dm band and this album just proves that imo.

Ok yea I wasn’t meaning Immo specifically on auto pilot and would agree with your comment. That part was aimed more broadly at other legacy bands

I wouldn't say they're on autopilot exactly, idk but I think both acts of God and atonement are significantly better than this tho. Their career, discog and legacy speaks for itself and they're an easy top 5 dm band of all time whether this rules or not
