I LOVE City Burials. His voice is the best it has ever been. Sky void of stars seemed like a huge drop in quality. I have yet to listen to this album as well. A little behind

SVOS was way better than City Burials imo, though I still think The Fall of Hearts is the peak of modern Katatonia (and the peak of their whole discog, for that matter)

City Burials, the one before that, and the one before that are super dope. I only heard SVOS once, and without headphones. I of course will be revisiting it

The Fall of Hearts took a couple listens, but once it cicked. oh boy. Front to back it is an amazing album. Easily one of my favorites of theirs

Their whole discography is strong and consistent. I am unsure how City Burials is looked at negatively. Still had good lyrics, his voice was incredible, music was good. Great choruses as well. Whether I am in the minority or not, the albums is fantastic IMO

The Fall of Hearts rules, but I'd take Dead End Kings over it in terms of their modern era.

I can't believe this site has been panning this album. I completely missed this last year and was looking for something to drive home listening to this evening. Lo and behold, a Katatonia release I hadn't heard! Perfect for an hour long ride in during a thunderstorm at sunset.

This immediately grabbed me in a way their releases haven't since Fall of Hearts. It's far more challenging than their last two releases. Doesn't fall into the pitfalls SVOS did (completely boring and predictable) while still having some catchy "Night is the New Day" moments sprinkled throughout.

My biggest gripe was the recording being not the best. Not sure why they ever abandoned the setup they had on Dead End Kings/NITND which was completely perfect. Maybe it was lightning in a bottle. I reserve the right to be wrong here, I don't exactly have pimped out car audio. But this clears their last two releases easily imo.

Katatonia's discography seems to be rated extremely harshly for some reason, so maybe that's why one can't or shouldn't necessarily rate this a 4 (I'm going to anyway), but this easily fits up with their best imo. Had a lot of fun listening to it. It's creative, clever, a little experimental, a little conventional, sprinkled with some great solos and evocative atmospheric movements. I restate that I'm shocked this is so panned here.

glad you enjoyed it, but it's not just this site that shares the same feelings towards this record.

I'm with Pat here, to each their own but I don't get why people think this is so mid.

That's fine DB, I tend to think Sputnik is a little better on the uptake than most, hence why I hang around here (not solely to shit post, believe it or not). I remain surprised to see people saying this is "boring" especially. It's easily their most dynamic album in recent memory, even among their big 3 from 10 years ago. We're going from quiet to loud here, we're chugging into a solo into a choir (a choral part?? in a Katatonia song??), we're 'thrashing' (kind of??) at times... we've got an entire song that's keys, voice and then some interesting electronics.

And this album is being called boring? I don't get it.

To tell more this is in my TOP 3 Katatonia albums (alongside with Dead End Kings and Night Is A New Day). Such a dynamic journey this is! Favs are Lilac, Efter Solen and The Liquid Eye, what a gems!

And last but not least what a freaking good cover art and overal presentation of an album (I have all colors on vinyl) - what a beauty!

"this is in my TOP 3 Katatonia albums"

That makes two of us. Great album and I agree about the art. The CD release looks gorgeous in and out, and I appreciate the minimalistic design of the booklet.

But sure as hell I don't like how the orientation of the disc sleeve makes it extremely inconvenient to pull the record out.
