i do think i'd like this more if it weren't so compressed - total headache to get through due to the heavyhanded compression

I kind of just expect loud heavy music to have some amount of compression

some amount is fine lol, it's an essential part of mastering after all, but this amount just spoils the presentation.

Noctus I would imagine vinyl versions would be better to you as they can't push the levels up as high on those

from working with labels i learned they usually just take the cd master, lower the gain and press that these days so it's very unlikely to be different (unless they announce a specific vinyl master). damn shame. my label thought it was 'unusual' i had a specific vinyl master for my record which i found puzzling lol.

yey not the only one that isn't super happy about the production lol

don't get me wrong every deafheaven album has been pretty heavily compressed but this is the first where i think it's a real problem. i don't automatically think anything with loud mastering is bad, it's just really unflattering to this album's sound. a lot of that high-end texture of the guitars just sounds like white noise and it cripples the nuances of the tone.

Album has 4.01 avg on RYM (with 5000+ ratings) and 4.4 (with almost 400 ratings) on sput. I think it's time to assume some of us weren't crazy when we called this the best Deafheaven. It felt that way for me since the first spin.
PS: Revelator goes pretty damn hard, specially after Incidental II, great placement choice.
PS2: Body Behavior SOTY as of today. What a track man

I think I will end up 5ing this tbh. There is something very special about this album. It's for sure Top 3 blackgaze albums ever.

Ima be honest, though there are some truly great records in the genre, blackgaze has so many forgettable bands that just jumped on the trend after Sunbather blew up. It for sure wasn’t the first record to do it, but it’s the one that influenced a generation of creatively bankrupt bands aping that style.

yeah even as someone who doesn't like sunbather much it had a massive impact on the genre and it's definitely a far more inspired attempt than its many immitators. say what you like about sunbather but it's a very sincere record and at the time was a very bold take on black metal.
i think on a whole deafheaven just isn't for me but i still see their existence as a good thing - glad the fans are loving this one, even if i think the idea of it being #1 black metal album of all time is absurd lol. especially since by and large i wouldn't say this is much of a black metal record - it has more in common with screamo and hardcore to my ears.

i can't lie it is absurd, but for me it's like Filosofem should've never been the #1 anyway so i'm laughing at their expense
