"I mean the band is kinda selling it like this though right?"

I actually don't know? I don't pay much attention to marketing cycles for albums anymore, but just from listening to it, sure it has elements of Oldpeth (especially the *awful* artwork) but it also isn't a rehash. I think saying that stepping forward means the band has to completely shed their identity is pretty unfair too, why limit what tools you have in your repertoire? If anything kinda stinks about Newpeth it was that it felt like the band was denying half of their identity to pursue Mikael's pet sound, the theatrical progressive death rock of this album is certainly different than anything they've done to this point and it lets more hidden members like Mendez flex the fuck out of their musical skill. The growls really aid the heavier sections but it never really becomes death metal, and I think that's about the most fascinating choice Mikael could have made. If anything toes the line too close to Oldpeth rehashing its probably A Story Never Told and that's easily my least favorite song here

The sheer amount of talent every single member has really makes it so that even the weakest moments of their discog deserve at least worth a full listen. Deliverance is prob my least fav Oldpeth and I've still spun it into the dirt. Deliverance through Master's Apprentices is one of the best song runs in their discog fs

Hell yeah! Those deep ass growls right after acoustic section in Master's Apprentices are soooo badass, and then the melody after??!? Great song.

I'd hella read a ranking of all their songs btw, would def get a lot of engagement too probably

The more times I spin this thing, the more wrong the 2.9 feels. It actually makes me laugh. Promise you, this will be thought of as one of their best. (Yeah I know everyone has their own opinions, but even still…)

I don’t think anyone would be in a rush to call this the best of opeth either now or ten years down the track. They have two seminal, heralded releases for a reason. They set the bar, slapped their fingerprints all over it and went on a mushroom bender because they could…

I love what they did in here. I'm one of those Opeth fans who LOVE the Heritage, Pale Communion era and this definitely feels like Newpeth trying to rescue elements of yore and fusion them in their new path. I need to give this more listens but first impression is excellent.
