I think I'm with you, Drifter. I saw Earl live at Pitchfork and legit left to go to another set because it was so unenjoyable Some Rap Songs sounds like a compilation of voice memos.
The dude is clearly talented, but I just can't get into his music when it sounds like he himself hardly cares.

Said it in the Morale thread the other day, idk if anyone else has mentioned it or has the same thought on it, but this record just feels like what Damn should’ve been. I still like that album but this one ups it in every way imo

Earl makes his apathetic aesthetic work really well on his albums but I can't imagine seeing him live being all that enjoyable. then again I don't think most rappers would be enjoyable live apart from the maybe 5% that actually kill it

I saw him live once and he was good. Boldy James opened though and rocked that shit

I’ve seen most big name rap acts and even more underground ones and the genre far and away translates the worst live. However some of my favorite shows were-unsurprisingly- rap. A lot of it has to do with how drugged up so many of them are, even just weed can kill a show

That being said the one time I saw earl I think was just before or just after he went away and it was super fun. He’s on some other shit now tho for sure

Worst live rap act for me was Kanye at Bonnaroo 2014. Had a meltdown on main stage in front of like 50k people. Left to see Mastodon

I'm still very new to Kendrick but I'm loving this album from start to finish. My rating will surely go uneven though I'm certain it's not To Pimp a Butterfly. Also is Man at the Garden an intentional nod to One Mic of just a coincidence?

Yeah I picked up on the too. I used to listen to a ton of rap and hip hop around 15 or so years ago with brother. He was in to a lot of Nas, Papoose, Budden, Sadistik, MF, Tupac etc. I stopped listening to rap music after my brother died for several years until I listened to To Pimp a Butterfly for the first time this year. Now I send my brother all the new rap albums I find on his Facebook memorial page, I'm sure he would be impressed with my finds

Spun this on the way back from band practice again and there’s so much depth to the initial 8 track run I don’t know how you could possibly call it generic or dumbed down

Thanks man, now that I am in a better headspace about the whole thing it's fun exploring the hip hop genre these days. Makes me feel good rediscovering songs he used to show me in his busted grand prix on the way to school everyday
