I think basically anything the band does now is going to divide people

Besides Damnation, which is a clear 5, Sorceress is the best progpeth, even with a messy tracklist. Individually it has most of their strongest post-Watershed material.

“Heritage > ICV > this > PC > Sorceress and that is my final answer” (2)

Perfect ranking. I’m letting this marinate a little while first tho, there are some cool elements and it certainly doesn’t feel throwaway or ‘dialled in’ - just not sure it all works for me thus far. The growls are amusing. Agreed with whoever said it’s like progressive death rock. I don’t know that they really add much when the core sound is very much newpeth. The execution is fine, just feels a bit obligatory and shoehorned on at times

This sucks lol the growls are back but it’s not a return to form by any means.

this was...meh, mostly. I think the concept holds it back from the beginning. 4 was pretty cool.

Disney prog at its finest

Literally every song besides the last track sounds the same, the growls and his weird harmonies do not mesh and there’s too big a focus on annoying poly prog stuff. Basically it fits right in with his obsession with wanky emotionless prog. I like the final track.

The prog fairytale embellishments are actually the most interesting elements, lol… some of the strings are nice, as is the flute. That’s probably not a good thing because so far the songs aren’t sticking and it appears there’s a disconnect of sorts

As messy and occasionally inconsistent as ICV was, it managed to be fun and memorable. It had the soul of Opeth. This is definitely falling somewhere between that one and PC / Sorceress (their worst albums) thus far

I stand corrected, there’s a couple of nice rhythmic parts too - possibly my fave overall element. Nice percussion and the bass does satisfy on occasion (S5 in particular - I’m not finishing that special character)
