It's cool. I've been missing LP so much that I'll welcome an album like this any day, despite the fact that it has really bland songwriting at times and the lyricism falls short. Emily's vocals are sometimes just enough to elevate songs in here to greatness while others end up simply enjoyable. Good Things Go really got to me, although it put a really abrupt end to the album. Other than that, their heavier tracks is when they're actually fun.

The lyrics are so bad. Even worse than usual for this band.

Seriously. Even if I liked the music I wouldn’t be jamming this much. Emily is fine for the most part but god damn Mike has some serious cornball ass bars. And he was never great to begin with.

He should go the Casualty route and start yelling more. He’s got a decent punkish shout imo. That’s really the best song here imo

"Alright chief you’re really gonna pretend you didn’t jam the fuck out of Hybrid Theory as an angsty teen?" (2) like i jammed that and meteora as an angry fuckin 8-year-old and minutes to midnight was always up there for me too. i think the first time i ever had a "wtf" reaction was a thousand suns, but as time went on the more I loved that too. it always felt like they were writing for THEM and setting the trends at that point. hunting party might be my least fav LP because I felt the heaviness didn't come off natural. it's like a scream aim fire case where there's good songs but it didn't quite feel right. one more light was always gonna divide and it took a while for me but i eventually came around to it.

this is gonna need time to sit with me but i'm overall coming away positive.

I mean they were never exactly a top tier band in any way shape or form - they have a handful of solid catchy songs across HT and Meterora with decent replay value and couple more throughout their others but the wave of adulation for them as one of the great modern bands is a more recent phenomenon that spiked after Chesters suicide

This is terrible by any standard though

As someone who's appreciation for music was basically built off of this band, I feel it's remiss to say this wasn't a "top tier" band. "a handful of catchy songs" is a haphazardly way of saying "I don't appreciate the absolute mark this band left on people" which is surprising coming from a fellow Pantera fan.

solid point, especially being into pantera. They’re the same kinda “I grew out of that phase” bands for sure.

Like honestly, I loved both of them when I was like 13-16, and I’d never dunk on someone for still digging their classic material

A handful of catchy songs was way too dismissive and I don't mean to shit on early LP, but a band can be obviously be influential and addictive without necessarily having phenomenal songwriting, lyrics, instrumentation, originality etc but I guess it depends on your definition of top tier. For me to consider something all time great it usually needs to tick a couple more boxes

A song like Papercut - my favorite LP track - is amazing for what it is, but I just don't quite hold it in the pantheon of truly incredible songs, not because I could never allow a nu metal song into it but because it's still a little kitschy and formulaic and just isn't as inspiring or moving at least in my eyes when I take off the nostalgia goggles

I wouldn't say it's that I outgrew them either, I still regularly listen to Pantera and early LP, more than most bands I rate more highly, though LP get props for being one of the first to blend those styles in a way that was polished and digestible, Pantera will always get major credit for being perhaps the only band in history to become more experimental and inaccessible at the height of their fame, and they have some killer ballads and riffs that even detractors can't really deny.

Anyway this is sounding a bit like a pretentious copypasta but hopefully there's a point buried somewhere in it

Linkin Park was always a novelty more than anything - a teenager's first experience with heavy rock music - but then once you pass a certain age you realize there's no artistic substance to it, it just sounded nice to hear loud music as a child

“I listen to it more often than music I rate higher” lol how hard do you need to doublethink and intellectualise to rate music you like lower than music you’re less keen on.

Mainly because I'm not in the mood / headspace for listening to something like Grouper or paysage dhiver as often as with Linkin park or Pantera. There are some easy viewing movies I've watched a lot more than my favorites, especially comedies. Doesn't seem that hard to wrap your head around?
