Listening again, I like it but I'm still struggling with the clean choruses, it does get formulaic after a while.

Just caught them at Blissmas this past weekend. They played their entire discography and just crushed it. The new album really elevates in a live environment, Greg's vocals were so impressive, and the drummer who filled for Goose absolutely crushed it. Highly recommend catching them live if you get the chance. Also getting to see Converge for the first time was definitely a musical bucket list item. Converge exceed all the expectations and hype I had for seeing them live, will definitely try to catch them again.

Who played drums do you know? Was Goose sick or something?
|
| |
Hey Nash, sadly Goose's step daughter became very ill at the end of November/start of December and it turned out it was leukemia. Not sure of all the details but they are in Salt Lake where she is being treated. The drummer was Matt Guglielmo who they shouted out for playing in 4 bands that week (Acacia Strain, END, a third band I can't recall and Better Lovers) and playing something like 54 unique songs during that 4-5 day stretch.

Oh damn I did not know about that. That’s awful.
And wow, yeah Matt is insane. He did the drums on the newest END record that are phenomenal

Super fun album, different from their EP, but very much needed considering it's a full-length

Yeah, if you weren’t really feeling the EP I could definitely see ya liking this more.
That EP is fuckin relentless imo and this has a lot more melodic tracks. I’m kinda glad for it too, i really don’t like Deliver Us From Life but At All Times is amazing. I just want more tracks like Misplaced Self and Drowning in a Burning World. To me those are the only three tracks that stack up to the EP.
I dig Lie Between the Lines a lot too, sets the tone for the rest of the record really well. Also tbh, I feel like for the most part Greg’s lyrics just aren’t as good here.

I mean I can only speak from my experience when I saw them, but people went fuckin wild for 30 Under 13, these tracks just didn’t have that same punch imo

I like both the EP and this album a ton, Drowning in a Burning World and At All Times were both bangers. Really the whole album had a ton of bangers amidst it. It just took me a damn long time to properly check it out because I was prepared for a full-length God Made Me an Animal, and was unprepared to get not that lol

This is miles better than the EP imo, the EP is a bit too samey from track to track and the variety here helps a lot for relistening.

Y'know, I think I'm realizing that I like Keith's cleans more than Greg's. It's probably cause he's more focused on singing a more classic melody and not as eager to show off his range every chance he gets.

As much as I prefer Greg overall as a vocalist, I do agree. I think it's more just that his cleans don't work as well in this context, the context being southern fried party metalcore

I think that Greg is more physically talented with a larger range for sure, but Keith seems to have more taste. Never heard Many Eyes so idk if that still holds up. If you compare a ETID song like Revival Mode to really any of Greg's performance, Keith sounds so focused and even in a way that Greg really never does.

Many Eyes is really bad, I don't know exactly what happened to Keith between Low Teens and Radical (and don't care to speculate) but he's gone completely off the boil. He used to be such a focused, compelling lyricist, with the vocal range to match. One of the saddest fall offs in recent memory.
