In terms of potentially harsh 3.5s for 2024 I've got:
- State Faults 'Children of the Moon'
- Thou 'Umbilical'
- SLIFT 'Ilion'
- Michael Kiwanuka 'Small Changes'
- Oranssi Pazuzu 'Muuntautuja'
- Phosphorescent 'Revelator'
- Floating Points 'Cascade'
- Fat Dog 'Woof'
- Mabe Fratti 'Sentir que no sabes'
- Iglooghost 'Tidal Memory Exo'
- Jamey Johnson 'Midnight Gasoline'
- Bibio 'Phantom Brickworks (LP II)'
- Cindy Lee 'Diamond Jubilee'
- Convulsing 'Perdurance'
- Dirty Three 'Love Changes Everything'
- English Teacher 'This Could Be Texas'
- Blood Incantation 'Absolute Elsewhere'
Those are the ones I have ummed and ahhed over promoting to 4's the most this year, all really good albums, so I don't think I've been handing out 4+ scores like candy really.

Burden of Life may be my SOTY check that one.

revisited this for the first time since I originally checked, and Burden of Life is still the easy peak (Lost Changes warrants a shoutout though)
Realised that relatively few of my gripes with this lie with the songwriting or her delivery, just rly do not rate how elaborate most of these arrangements are. So many points here cheapen her delivery by working so hard to accentuate it (which the two songs I mention are exceptions in avoiding)

Oceans is one of the best songs Beth has ever crooned

yeah, the stripped back cuts are the better parts of this. Burden of Life is certainly the peak. I don’t mind the embellishing nature of the arrangements necessarily though, because idk if a whole album in the same low-key tone would work quite as well. I enjoy the contrast, even if it’s obvious where her strengths lie

And those embellished moments work so super nicely in a live setting! But agreed, I'm not in the mood to revisit this ever really, which is strange...

Not so strange, surely. It doesn't exactly lift the mood.

It's so depressing it only fits a harsh hangover level of misery for me, but have to admit it's beautiful in equal measure. Definitely not going back though.
