Of course this is better than a lot of mainstream country, because that is a laughably low bar to clear. Cowboy Carter just isn't all that compelling of an album if you strip away all the qualifiers that were heavily marketed with the album. It's competently made and her vocals are incredible, as expected, but it feels like listening to a 27-song marketing trailer for her.
