5.0 Classic
Megadeth Dystopia
"Better than Endgame, better than Rust in Peace, smokes Countdown and the rest of the 90's crap that everyone else thinks is good for some reason, comes very close to matching Peace Sells as their best album. Modern classic."

I’m trying to decide between 7 or 8 on this. I enjoy every song except Junkie and Mission on Mars

Dystopia is a joke compared to the brilliant sophistication of Countdown.
This new album is all you can expect from them these days.
Has its moments, also repeats a zillion moments from earlier albums, every second lick sounds like something from Five magics, then into the lungs of hell, then tornado of souls, verse of Black friday etc.
But its not too bad as well.

A very reductive take on Countdown to Extinction, user Jesuslaves.
Even watered down as it was in comparison to Rust in Peace, it still has the best line-up, it still has Marty's incredible solos, Probably Dave's best vocal performance and some of the catchiest songs he ever wrote. Dystopia doesn't deserve to lick the shit off of Countdown's heel. Ashes in Your Mouth also thrashes harder than anything off of Dystopia and is a lot more memorable, as is the rest of the record.

Yeah... pretty much par-for-the-course 'Deth at this point. Could'a just skipped those ~5 songs in the middle of the album and had something real solid. There are some great songs/moments here, but as an album it's just a chore to get through. So many painfully corny moments...
Also, Countdown rules. So many killer riffs, iconic mix, great dialogue between guitar and bass, Marty's leads shine beautifully against the stripped back song structure. The songs that got popularized on that album are probably the worst ones.

Indeed, Ashes in Your Mouth is incredible.

at first listen, this is better than dystopia
edit: although, like dystopia, the last few tracks are just filler?

Jesus saves - you've just got Metallica Black Album goggles on too tight and letting them blind you, thinking Countdown was their black album (which it wasnt) your missing the sophistication 100%
Incredible UNIQUE riffs, architecture of aggression, ashes in your mouth, even Sweating Bullets was trying new pioneering ideas, his lyrics and vocals went up a notch, still had the attitude and snarl, musicianship and precision of the recording and production. Its actually the architype Megadeth album and the whole era around it. Angry Again, 99 ways to die also had that interesting riff, vocal melody and dynamics.
Its still heavy in its delivery especially compared to almost all albums after it, some of the more recent albums with Psuedo heaviness, which have been blinding everyone to the average songwriting and re hashing of old ideas. Which was Dystopia by the way.
