As a diehard fan, I feel like their acoustic/softer stuff with this lineup has been a bit hit or miss.

Afterman the song is incredible and dare I say a career highlight. Subtraction was cool too. Hell, I even thought Iron Fist was a fun and cute lil bop.

But then I'm reminded of some of the stuff on Color Before the Sun and Lucky Stars from Vaxis I and they are usually pretty inessential.

Yeah I love Iron Fist but it and Number City are the only two songs I like on Descension.

I pretend TCBTS doesn't exist because it's an embarrassing release and I hate having to hear Island or Mars live. I like Lucky Stars though.

Lucky Stars isn't a bad song and I enjoyed it more than I remembered upon another listen from the other day, but I'd still file it as pretty inessential.

TCBTS really is such a black sheep in their catalog lol I don't really think any of the songs are that bad other than Here to Mars, which is such a terrible song and blatantly a copy of themselves only worse, but it feels like it just aims headscratchingly low for such an ambitious band. Atlas is a bop though and I really wish Bridge and Tunnel made it onto the album proper.

I think Descension gets far too much hate on here though

This blows my mind. Sentry, Gravity's Union, Away We Go, 2's My Favorite 1? Descension rules, and for me Iron Fist is the only one I don't like.

Pretelethal is fun too. But yeah, Sentry, Gravity's Union, 2's My Favorite 1 are undeniable bangers. I get why people don't like The Hard Sell, but to me it's such a hilarious song. It's Coheed making a Pink Floyd song with cock rock flavoring. I can't not love it.

Dark Side of Me is probably the worst song, but I don't think it's bad.

lol absolutely this. The Hard Sell bangs and is huge fun, but is also one of the silliest things this band has made. would take it over any of the Dark Side/Iron Fist/Away We Go snooze

I typed up a whole comment before some of these responses but it didn't post so here it is.

"Really? I feel like I'm in the minority of people that don't like Descension but I think The Hard Sell (contender for Coheed's worst song), 2's My Favorite 1, and Away We Go are just awful. Everything else sounds like a generic Coheed wannabe band except for the 2 aforementioned songs in my last comment. "

It's weird seeing hate for 2's My Favorite 1. I think it's an awesome closer and is really sweet. Dare I say it's one of Claudio's best songs lyrically.

The main problem I see with Descension is that the album climaxes relatively early on with Gravity's Union and is largely falling action after. Splitting Afterman in two hurts Descension more than Ascension, but I still think it's overhated. I will die on the hill that Hard Sell rules. Away We Go and Iron Fist might not be the best songs, but I think they are fun in their own right and especially Iron Fist has some fun quirks (the ba da's). Dark Side of Me is really the only song that I feel like lacks any sort of energy and doesn't succeed with what it's attempting.

I don't know man. I just hate Claudio helium inhale singing "two hearts beat as one" to start off the closer. I've tried so hard to get into that album. Even Gravity's Union does pretty much nothing for me. Sentry sounds like a NWFT b-side. Dark Side of Me, like you said, is lackluster. I was super disappointed when Descension finally came out because I seriously adore Ascension.

Underselling "Gravity" hard tbh, there's a lot of good to unpack there. I won't argue that the album on the whole is better than pt. 1 but it's got its highlights.

""Hard Sell" is fun, don't be wildin like that."

"You're selling out to be in" is the worst ending to a chorus from Coheed I've ever heard. It sounds so bad and is rivaled only by gems like "run, run, run, run, run like a son of a gun."

Actually, has Claudio ever sung "bad mama jamma" in a song? I feel like his lyrics over the past decade can be that bad sometimes.

The unfortunate reality is that I listened to Vaxis I yesterday and the only thing stuck in my head for the next day after listening to the full album was: "run, run, run, run, run like a son of a gun"

I guess it's never sounded that jarring to me. What makes it sound any worse from other lyrics or vocal inflections? Feels relatively harmless as a whole.

Gravity's Union is a fine song, a good one even, but I've just never cared much for it. Every time I hear it (I'm actually listening to it right now) I just move on from it. The chorus is cool but Idk, it doesn't resonate in a way that makes me want to keep listening to it over and over like so many of their other songs.

I'm not trying to yum your yuck, but I don't understand how someone can buy into the zany shenanigans of this band -both in sound and in concept- but be turned off by lines like "run, run, run, run, run like a son of a gun" or "you're selling out to be in" lol There are so many lines where he says "bad boy" and other ridiculous things. They're clearly just being tongue-in-cheek while having fun.

It's in stark contrast to, say, Here to Mars, which is a joyless attempt at making an anthem and the lyrics don't have any emotion to them

"You're selling out to be in" is a terrifyingly bad lyric, but ONE OF ME has good delivery and the switch between funkprog in the verses to chugprog in the chorus is entertaining enough to net it a pass
