Thin thing alone is better than the bends combined but I’m not surprised to see the basics come out of the woodwork to defend that alb

Forget defending The Bends, it's more about pointing out how this album is bad
Like I was revisiting The Smoke and Thin Thing, the two obvious highlights, and even they aren't good. They're just passable. Waving a White Flag might be the worst Thom Yorke related song I've heard and You Will Never Work in Television Again has the safest mom-rock riff ever
This might be a 2, not a 2.5
Fuck it, I guess I'm gonna give it another full listen

Television sounds like a Royal Blood car advert ass ripoff
Free in the Knowledge is Neil Young on morphine
We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings sounds like a HTTT F-side
The Same has the cringiest platitude filled lyrics Thom has ever written
The Smoke has a nice horn section but goes nowhere
Skrting is 10 years too late
album is shite

free in the knowledge deserves all the world's kicking tbh
it's so campfire that if you aren't by a campfire when you're strumming it 1d3 campfires appear in a 40ft radius around the party i hate this song a lot

Ars raises good points tho I think the few good songs are good

Dear Thom,
Just because shag The Eleven it doesn't mean you've written a good song.

I could see myself dropping my rating after a second listen. Don’t see it going higher, already felt like I was being optimistic with the 3 and reeeaaally focusing on the positives of the back half being a lot less shit than the front half

Break down of a 2nd and probable final listen:
1.The Smoke: engaging opening synths. Feels like it's trying to be "Everything in Its Right Place" but doesn't have the lyrics to back it up. Ends without going anywhere real. This had potential, but the potential never went kinetic. 2.5/5
2. The Opposite: Fancy riff, but this has huge b-side energy. Hell, this one doesn't go anywhere either wtf Thom. 2.5/5
3. You Will Never Work in Television Again: As stated before -- Mom Rock riff. song But this also sounds like the kind of inspiring indie I loathe. 2/5
4. Pana-Vision: The strings rescue this song a little, but still I mean it's still really hard to care about this one. Like what if "The Numbers" was less interesting y'know? 3/5
5. The Smoke: Good bassline. WAIT, is this song JUST a good bassline? Wait no there are some woodwinds and trumpets? Feels thin somehow though, but idk it's the best one yet. Feels directionless still though. 3.5/5
6. Speech Bubbles: Oh god this song really is on autopilot. Sure it's pretty, but like what happened to engaging pretty songs? Radiohead can do that, so why not The Smile??? 2.5/5
7. Thin Thing: Pretty engaging actually, okay I see why you guys like this one. Thom should be shouting more on it though -like Bodysnatchers. Man why is he holding his voice back so much, it's extra glaring on this song because the "Bodysnatchers" style shouting is kinda needed here for it to be amazing. Match the guitar energy Thom, are you old and tired??? Good otherwise 4/5

8. Open the Floodgates: Another slow low energy song. Just what this album needed. But this time the synths sound kinda like a quiet doorbell. 2.5/5
9. Free in the Knowledge: Is this just Speech Bubbles again or did I forget what Speech Bubbles sounds like? So much of this is just piano ballad+light strings+mid-tempo drums+Thom trying to emotionally grab you by sounding wistful. 2.5/5
10. A Hairdryer: That actually sounds like a stereotypical Radiohead riff and the drums are energetic, hmm. Is this potentially a highlight? Nah. 3/5
11. Waving a White Flag: That synth is medieval-sounding but it's a synth, okay. If you took out the vocals, garas would probably say this is a good dungeon synth song. This is somehow worse than anything on Pablo Honey, worse than Radiohead's worst b-side. On an album that has too many mellow tracks, they concocted a mellow song that sounds like it belongs at a cyberpunk renaissance fair. 1/5
12. We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings: Oh man, the vocals are actually working and the guitar and synths are uh... fine I don't know all of the guitar songs except for Television are this. "I'm stuck in a rut" he sings. I know Thom, I know. 2.5/5
13. Skrting on the Surface: Leaving the letter "i" out of words doesn't feel justified since this album isn't skippy electronic enough... or at all really. This song is just like guitar track, so that name makes even less sense here. Man I feel so teased by the woodwinds... like what if lots of clarinet and oboe could've made this really cool orchestral pop? 2.5/5
Final thoughts: Thin Thing is the best here, but The Same and The Smoke had the most potential to be great to a point where I think some proper remixes could make them better. Waving a White Flag is the worst Thom Yorke song ever and cannot be saved. This averages to 2.61538461538, so I will not be 2ing this, but it's certainly not a 3.
(no one read all of this, but shh I did this for myself)

That’s a pretty liberal rating for Television tbh

yeah most of this is kinda bad lol probably gonna drop my rating. I just don't understand the love for Thin Thing though, might be the worst Radiohead song I've ever heard. Free In The Knowledge is not good either but I would put it far above True Love Waits at least

TBH I want the next Radiohead album to be abrasive as fuck as
Gimme industrial Radiohead. They can do one soft piano ballad, but that's it but it better be a REAL tearjerker like How to Disappear Completely or Sail to the Moon
